To give you a basic guideline and rubric for whether or not you think I'm an idiot, I give you this list of my biggest movie influences. When I give a review; You look at this list, and realize that you cannot find Steel Magnolias or Bring it On on my top 10, and thought they should have been, you are a girlie and I don't want you reading my blog.
However, if you look at my list and find common-ground, I welcome you as a kinsman. Feel free to let me know how you think I mis-ranked this list. Sidenote- many movies are on here because of the way they changed filmmaking through their groundbreaking style, effects, or innovation.
Love,
- Tallbrey

I realize that this is a list of your biggest movie influences, not a list of the greatest movies of all time. However, my comments below are predicated upon the assumption that you simply haven't seen the movies that I mention. If you had, you certainly would've included them.
ReplyDeleteA couple of glaring errors. No mention of Deadwood in the appendix. Also, no mention of Fifth Element. Without these 2, we can't be friends.
No Empire Strikes Back? No matter what you think of Star Wars in general, you cannot discount the fact that ESB is a great movie, and "I am your father" was one of the most surprising turns in any movie ever. Because of our age, we fail to realize how big that revelation was when it happened.
Other than some changing of the order (I think Matrix has to be higher, for instance), it's a good list. A little slanted toward modern flims, but I don't know if there's any way to get around that. No Hitchcock, for instance, is a problem for me. Also, you have to consider Casablanca, Chinatown and French Connection--3 of the greatest movies of all time. Watch them if you haven't seen them--you'll be glad you did. Also, Jaws has to be considered.
I would've included more sports movies--Hoosiers being chief among those. If Shooter knew you left his movie off, he'd run the picket fence on you, and Jimmy Chitwood would sink a jumper all up in your face. Also, Raging Bull is a must have.
In the comedy genre, I would have to include Christmas Vacation, Fletch & The Three Amigos, just because of the sheer number of times I've watched each.
Arlington Road is one of my obscure favorites. Gilly refuses to watch it. The Sting is one of my favorites, and I'm glad you included it. Good to see Blazing Saddles on your list.
Lastly and most importantly, I'm sure I missed it somehow--maybe it's on another, better list or it has it's own blog entry entitled Grand Champion--but I didn't see Joe Dirt on the list. I assume that its exclusion is some sort of joke. It certainly couldn't be an oversight.
